STRATEGIES
Nuclear Deterrence and SAM Networks
From the first Silo to MIRV — nuclear strike timing, SAM placement, and anti-nuke strategy.
The Three-Phase Nuclear Tempo
Nuclear warfare in OpenFront breaks down into three distinct phases:
Phase 1 · Deterrence Setup (3-5 minutes)
- Goal: Let your opponent know you can retaliate.
- Build: 1 Missile Silo (1M) + 1 SAM (1.5M).
- Effect: A single SAM covers 70 tiles, already enough to protect your core cities. Bot Nukes actively avoid SAM coverage, meaning just building a SAM creates deterrence.
Phase 2 · Live Strikes (5-8 minutes)
- Goal: Stockpile 5M Gold + 1 Hydrogen Bomb to crater the enemy core.
- Build: Upgrade 2-3 SAMs to level 3+, add a second Silo.
- Target priority:
- Enemy City clusters (drains their troop cap).
- Enemy Silos and SAMs (cripples their retaliation).
- Enemy trade Ports (cuts their economy).
Phase 3 · MIRV Coordination (8+ minutes)
- Goal: Use MIRV to force the opponent to scatter their defenses.
- Build: Stockpile 25M Gold, fire your first MIRV; +15M for each subsequent launch.
- Key point: v24 nerfed MIRV damage, so its value is psychological pressure — SAMs can’t intercept MIRVs, forcing opponents to spread out expensive SAMs and actually weakening point defense.
SAM Placement Formula
Each SAM covers a circular disc:
samRange(level) = 150 − 480 / (level + 5)
level 1: 70 · level 2: ~81 · level 3: ~90
level 4: ~96 · level 5: ~140
Two or more SAMs covering the same target are required to survive a volley (90-tick cooldown). But don’t bunch them up — a single Hydrogen Bomb’s outer ring of 100 tiles will wipe them all out.
Anti-Nuke Checklist
- At least 2 SAMs covering every core City
- SAM spacing > 80 tiles
- Silos tucked inside the SAM perimeter
- Cities upgraded to level 2+ (population buffer)
- Never rely on a single point of defense — back up multiple cores
Classic Mistakes
- Hoarding a stack of Atom Bombs as your main weapon — at 750k each, the per-hit damage is limited and a single level 3 SAM intercepts the whole salvo. Hydrogen Bombs (5M) are the real nuclear strike.
- Treating MIRV as a finisher — post-v24 MIRV warheads only cover an 18-tile outer ring, far less damage than a Hydrogen Bomb. Use it as a psychological warfare tool.
- Naked Silos with no SAM cover — your Silo will be the enemy’s first Hydrogen Bomb target, and your retaliation capability drops to zero instantly.
Decision Tree
Do you have 5M Gold?
├─ No → Keep growing economy (City + Port + upgrades), don't build nukes
└─ Yes → Does the opponent have SAMs?
├─ No → Hydrogen Bomb their City cluster directly
└─ Yes → Are their SAMs < 3?
├─ Yes → Volley 2-3 Atom Bombs to saturate the SAM zone
└─ No → Stockpile to 25M Gold and launch MIRV Related content
